Ballet costumes are an essential part of stage design and can be seen as a visual record of a performance. It is often a feature of a production that represents a fictional representation of the play's premise. Fashion may change, but the tutu skirt does it is still a chic and classic ballet costume.

Indeed, the tutu has a historical past. The tutu is the product of the evolution of a ballet costume that debuted in 1832. Its first appearance tutu was the skirt worn by Marie Taglioni in 1832 at the Paris Opera. Her costume was an ankle-length white skirt designed by Eugene Lami for the ballet La Sylphide, which today is known as a romantic tutu.

From the late 1800s the tutu it was made smaller so that the ballerina could move easily and at the same time her legs could be seen. Today, the short one tutu is known as classical tutu and barely touches the ballerina's feet.

Ballet costumes have been a challenge for fashion designers for many years. Designers such as Cecil Beaton in England, o Christian Lacroix in France and Isaac Mizrahi in the United States have designed tutus.

However, when it comes to designers, the most famous is the Barbara Karinska (1886 – 1983), designer for the New York City Ballet for many years. Her costumes are known as the most beautiful and durable.

The modern tutu has several versions. First, there is the classic skirt which consists of 10-12 layers of stiff tulle sewn into the skirt. The lower small layers of tulle support the larger layers that stand at the hip.

The other guys tutu it's the Pancake Tutu , which is supported by a belt and is very flat with few layers. The flat tutu looks like pancakes, but instead of the hip, it stands in the middle. There is also the American tutu, which is known by the name of its creator – Karinska, or as Balanchine, or powder-puff tutu : it has small layers of tulle, which are etched into a skirt to give a soft effect.

The R omantic T utu she still has the form of her original costume Marie Taglioni, but it is made of modern materials that make it lighter and more transparent. Its length reaches the knee or ankle.

The Inverted Tutu it is something in between the classic tutu and romantic tutu. It is made of different layers of tulle that stand out like a classic tutu, but the layers are longer and lower, usually mid-thigh.
